A tribute to my dog, Timmy

I remember the time when we first got Timmy, I was in my 1st or 2nd year in college and my cousin Sunil brought this little pup from his home in Ernakulam. He just carried it along with him on a overnight bus trip to B'lore. Pretty soon it became a part of our family.

As kids we were fond of Enid Blyton's Famous five and so we decided to name him after the dog character in it. Timmy was a cross between a Pomeranian and a Daschund. The resulting combinations made Timmy get the long body of a Daschund with a furry body like that of a Pomeranian.

He seemed like an exceptionally smart dog, very sensitive to family and people. He appeared sad when we packed our bags to go on a trip leaving him behind and provided an unconditional happiness to see us return. This little fellow must have been a vegetarian in his last birth. He loved fruits, bananas were his favorite and mixing rice with a few boiled vegetables made his meal a treat. He would even crunch on raw carrots seemingly enjoying them as it went down to his tummy.

He also was a favorite among some of the street hawkers. They would stop by the gate throw him a banana or 2 and move on. However that did not make them any more welcome into the house. If they touched the gate in the process they would get an ear full of warnings.

Timmy had its share of mishaps; about 4/5 years ago a speeding mini van drove over his right leg. Dad, who watched it happen was furious and used his fist on the driver very effectively to display his feelings. He rushed him to the vet and Timmy was put in a cast. However that leg was damaged permanently. That did not stop him, pretty soon he was running on 3 legs and normalcy had returned.

On Sep 5th my sister called with a choked voice and the sad news. Timmy had been bed ridded the past months or so. He was 14 years old at this point and the Vet said that his liver was beginning to fail.

During his time he has watched us grow from being carefree teanagers, to completing our education, establishing a career, moving out and growing our families.

Cheers to the good times Timmy. I’ll miss you. You have thought me that life is short and I need to make the best of it.
