MY SUMMER SOARED BY
By: Nandita

My family and I enjoyed New York City. First, I saw 4 of my cousins Kayla, Rajeshri, Reena, Jeslyn. Together we had so much fun playing house and restaurant. Next, we all went to the Statue of Liberty with all of my fun clever cousins. We also went on a ship ride to fo to Liberty Island and the ride was wavy, bumpy and, s little choppy. Finally we went to the city we had ice cream it was so much fun. We saw twin towers, they were twins and grourmantic tours. In conclusion my family and I had a very fun time at New York.

Writing a letter to her teacher for letter writing practice.

Dear Mrs. Williams,

The way my dad teaches me i over my level until I can understand. Sometives I have learned are addiontoin, subtraction, mutiplacion, Division and algebra. He always works with me in the evening after my bath. My Dad pushes me all the time. So mostly I work independent in math and reading the two subjects he teaches me. Last I know cursive (each letter) from this big book.

Sincerely,
Nandita

And finally she is in the process of writing a story book that she plans to sell for $20. Nishanth has also agreed to read and put it down as part of his reading assignment.

Vegetable Garden 2010

This summer our vegetable garden was full of kumbalanga as it is known in Malayalam or Winter Melon in English. The number of them that grew were so abundant that Veena at one point felt guilty offering it to friends at every encounter. We have a couple of them stashed in the basement and hoping it will hold up for a few months.
The freezer is already full of it in its frozen form.

Some of the other things that were grown were the Long beans the brown variety. That is a staple every summer since we moved here. Tomatoes are a plenty along with green Chili or pepper as it is known here, we also managed to harvest two cucumbers the variety that we use for Vishu Kani. And a couple of beetroots.

Nishanth got hold of a sprouting Chembu (colocasia) (gui potato to my kids) from the pantry and planted it and his patience was rewarded when he harvested a single plant to find enough potatoes for a couple of meals. With Nishanth I sometimes wonder if I should be investing in a farm to secure his future.

Halloween 2010

Halloween to me represents the true end of summer mentally. All of the outdoor activities seem to come to a full stop at that point and the cold winter seems to raise its head with days that are freezing intermingled with days that are gorgeous.

What I like about it is that it also represents the end of the grass cutting season, but wait the work is not over yet, there is a another big round of activity in the cold and that is of raking leaves and preparing the yard for winter. It never ends does it?

Back to Halloween, Neetu reused her witch costume from last year and Nishanth was more than willing to do the same. Unfortunately it was too small for him and Veena went shopping with the kids for a new one. He found a power ranger one.

The excitement started about a week earlier with a Halloween bash at their Taekwondo center followed by Veena and the kids attempt at pumpkin carving. On "trick or treat" day itself the weather was perfect to be outdoor unlike most Halloweens where it is cold and wet.

A species called woman

There are certain things in life that I fail miserably at and one of them is to show sympathy and compassion and understanding to the various boomerangs that come my way from a group called Women. I call them boomerangs as almost always I am the one triggering the Unpleasantness. There have been plenty written about it in many humorous ways but in my opinion they could be a species by themselves.

Don't get me wrong, I certainly like all of the women involved in my life.

Some situations I see ballooning like clouds in the distant skies are...

* I feel like crying... hmm reason..? no reason.. just feel like crying.. Well, finding/suggesting solutions is my nature and so I go..call Amma or Radhika, they would love to give you a ear.. Well, I don't want you to find a solution...just let me cry..goes on for some time till I blow a gasket.

* My mom is a glutton for emotional dependence. Every now and then she slumps for sympathy and an unsuspecting comment like "Just think you are fine and you will feel a lot better" would bring a flood of crying and looks that just seemingly indicates how heartless I am. Over the years I have learnt better..just going with the flow and adding how miserable she must be along with attention and sympathy cures whatever ails her.

* One that goes along the same lines of "Does this dress make my butt look big?" is another question that goes "What are you thinking now?" my my.. this is a double edge sword watch out if you happen to really blurt out what is on your mind you set the trap for a sleepless night arguing over something very mundane, if you go with a "nothing" for an answer you set yourself up for an argument about how uncommunicative you are how I never tell anything about what happens in the office or what I had for lunch or which friends I talked to in office.

But then if all women had the same mind set as that of a man would life be any fun?

I like women for just the way they are...
